If you like to get in close and play dirty, these are for you, but they are the least flexible of the cannons. The have significantly shorter range than regular guns, but they do pack a huge punch and are pretty quick to reload. Cannonades are short, fat, but huge guns. The advantages are increased range and higher velocity on the shot, which in the future will lead to better penetration and more damage. Long cannons are longer barreled versions of the regular guns. Damage and reload time both go up as you increase in weight(the weight is the weight of the shot, not the gun, btw). Regular cannons are just that, the typical gun. Cannons come in 3 flavors, regular, long, and cannonade. Sometimes you are able to put heavy cannons on ships that come default with lighter ones(example, the brig comes stock with 4lb cannons but can be fitted with 6lb cannon right away). Square rigged ships have the archetypal square sails hanging from spars that are perpendicular, not in line with the ship.Ĭannon: When you unlock a new ship, be sure to go into the constructor(button at the bottom of the main screen) and see what cannons you can mount. If the pictures don't make it clear, Fore & Aft rigged ships, like the Lynx and Cutter, have sails that extend from the masts inline with the ship on spars and booms. Rigging: Ships are either fore and aft rigged or square rigged. All ships are strongest at the sides, slightly less strong but still pretty tough at the bow, and weak as tissue paper at the stern. If ya don't get it right, squirt, I throw your ass out the little round window on the side."Īrmor: All Ships have a hull, and that hull has armor in the form of great big wooden beams and planks. Lets take a look at some common things.ĭirections: When you are looking at the front of the ship from the deck, Left is Port and Right is Starboard. Sea Trials currently includes a wide variety of ships to sail and fight in. So you should trust me, savvy? Alright, on to the Good Stuff(tm). Since then I have extensively played Tides of War, Sea Dogs, the redone SM's Pirates, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Empire:Total War, and AC:Black Flag. The very first computer game I ever played was Sid Meier's Pirates on an old black and white Apple II.

I have been a fan of sailing for as long as I can remember, and naval combat games have been my favorite. I also taught both beginner and intermediate sailing classes for 5 years. I have been a recreational sailor for 16 years, and 3 of those were as a competitive sailor both on my high school varsity team and for a local club. I will be going over some things that every captain should know both about sailing and fighting in sailing ships. Hello! Hopefully this short guide can help out you guys and gals who are just starting to get into Naval Action.
